A new era for language learning

When I began teaching Arabic over a decade ago, my toolkit consisted of textbooks, flashcards, a whiteboard, and my voice. Today, I teach in an environment where AI-powered tools can generate personalised vocabulary lists, provide instant pronunciation feedback, adapt exercises to a student's exact level, and even write original Arabic stories tailored to a child's interests — in seconds.

This is not a distant future. It is happening now, in classrooms and living rooms across Riyadh and around the world. The question for educators and parents is not whether to engage with AI in language learning, but how to do so intelligently.

What AI tools do well

The current generation of AI language tools has genuine strengths that can meaningfully support Arabic learning:

• Personalisation at scale — AI can adapt content to a learner's level, interests, and pace in ways that a single teacher managing twenty students cannot. A child who loves dinosaurs can have Arabic vocabulary and reading exercises built around dinosaurs.
• Instant feedback — speech recognition tools can provide immediate pronunciation feedback, giving learners the kind of real-time correction that is impossible to deliver in a group setting
• Unlimited practice — AI tools never get tired or impatient. For learners who need to repeat a concept many times, this is enormously valuable
• Accessibility — high-quality Arabic instruction is no longer limited to families who can afford private tutors or live near specialist schools

What AI tools cannot do

It is equally important to understand where AI falls short in language education:

• Cultural transmission — language is inseparable from culture. The stories, values, humour, and social nuance embedded in Arabic cannot be meaningfully conveyed by an algorithm
• Relationship — research on language acquisition is clear that emotional connection with a teacher or peer is a significant driver of motivation and retention. AI cannot replicate this
• Error diagnosis — AI can identify that a learner made an error, but often cannot understand why — whether it is a phonological confusion, a transfer error from their first language, or a conceptual misunderstanding of a grammar rule
• Spoken Arabic complexity — most current AI tools perform better on Modern Standard Arabic than on the regional colloquial varieties that children actually hear in daily life

The tools I use in my practice

I have integrated several AI and digital tools into my teaching practice at EtonHouse International School and in my private sessions:

• ChatGPT — for generating custom reading passages, vocabulary exercises, and comprehension questions at specific difficulty levels
• Kahoot — for gamified vocabulary review that students consistently rate as their favourite part of the lesson
• Canva — for creating visual materials that make grammar rules memorable and visually engaging
• Google Classroom — for distributing materials, tracking progress, and maintaining consistent parent communication

The key is that each of these tools serves a specific pedagogical purpose. I do not use technology for its own sake, but because it solves a specific teaching or learning problem better than any alternative.

Advice for parents: how to use AI tools at home

If you want to use AI to support your child's Arabic learning at home, here are my practical recommendations:

• Use AI for practice and reinforcement, not for initial instruction — the first introduction to a concept should come from a human teacher
• Sit with your child when they use AI language tools, at least initially — this allows you to catch mislearning and keeps the experience social
• Choose tools designed for children — many general AI tools are not appropriate for young learners in either content or pedagogical approach
• Set time limits — screen-based language practice should supplement, not replace, real conversation

عصر جديد لتعلم اللغة

حين بدأت تدريس العربية قبل أكثر من عقد، كانت أدواتي تتكون من كتب مدرسية وبطاقات تعليمية وسبورة وصوتي. أما اليوم، فأدرّس في بيئة يمكن لأدوات الذكاء الاصطناعي فيها توليد قوائم مفردات مخصصة، وتقديم تغذية راجعة فورية للنطق، وتكييف التمارين وفق مستوى المتعلم بالضبط، بل وكتابة قصص عربية أصيلة مصممة لاهتمامات طفل بعينه — في ثوانٍ.

هذا ليس مستقبلاً بعيداً. إنه يحدث الآن، في الفصول الدراسية وغرف المعيشة في الرياض وحول العالم. السؤال للمعلمين والأهل ليس إذا كانوا سيتفاعلون مع الذكاء الاصطناعي في تعلم اللغة، بل كيف يفعلون ذلك بذكاء.

ما يتقنه الذكاء الاصطناعي

• التخصيص على نطاق واسع — يمكن للذكاء الاصطناعي تكييف المحتوى وفق مستوى المتعلم واهتماماته وإيقاعه بطرق يعجز عنها المعلم الواحد المسؤول عن عشرين طالباً
• التغذية الراجعة الفورية — يمكن لأدوات التعرف على الكلام تقديم تصحيح فوري للنطق
• تدريب لا محدود — أدوات الذكاء الاصطناعي لا تتعب ولا تفقد صبرها
• إتاحة الوصول — لم يعد التعليم العربي عالي الجودة حكراً على من يستطيعون تحمّل تكاليف معلمين خاصين

الأدوات التي أستخدمها في ممارستي التعليمية

دمجت عدة أدوات ذكاء اصطناعي ورقمية في ممارستي التعليمية في مدرسة إيتون هاوس الدولية وفي جلساتي الخاصة:

• ChatGPT — لتوليد نصوص قراءة مخصصة وتمارين مفردات وأسئلة استيعاب بمستويات محددة
• Kahoot — لمراجعة المفردات بشكل مُلعّب يعتبره الطلاب الجزء المفضل لديهم في الدرس
• Canva — لإنشاء مواد بصرية تجعل قواعد النحو راسخة في الذهن
• Google Classroom — لتوزيع المواد ومتابعة التقدم والتواصل المنتظم مع الأهل
